LESSONS LEARNED

The eJPT is BY FAR the most fun I have had in any examination for anything, EVER! For the benefit of all, here are some personal lessons learned for prospective student's benefit:

• Make sure you have all the tools you need actually FUNCTIONAL before starting the exam. For me, it was Metasploit and Nessus. Nessus needed to be downloaded, installed, and account established. Its not so much about time wasted, as it is interrupting your train of thought. It was common for me to zone in and forget to pause to take notes
• OMG TAKE NOTES! If I didnt do this, I would have failed definitely
• I used Coogle to mindmap my concept of what the infrastructure was and the status of the host. Notes can only go so far, and staring at a visual aid to plan my next move was extremely useful
• John, Hydra, Metasploit and Wireshark can be resource hogs. I recommend loading Metasploit, Burp, Nessus, John and Hydra cracking in the background, a browser with 5+ tabs, 4+ terminals, 3+ windows, and see how that configuration runs at full load. For me, I needed to double my VM allocated RAM from 2GB to 4GB. Not everyone can do this, but it helped a lot. My Metasploit kept crashing because there wasn't enough memory dedicated to my Kali VM. I use Kali lightly at home and work, but in an engagement, it helps to have multiple things going smoothly all at once.
• Initialize the Metasploit database [msfdb init] beforehand also to speed up searches. msfupdate also helps to make sure the exploit database is up to date

I am still new to cyber security (almost a year). While I get a lot of exposure working next to pen testers and working with clients on vulnerability management, I feel like this course definitely sets someone up for taking eCPPT or OSCP, and an entry level pen tester who has some IT experience. It takes someone who basically has a CompTIA A+ level understanding of IT, into the core methodology and toolsets of an entry-level pen tester. I definitely feel much more confident going into eCPPT! Totally worth it for others new to cyber security and considering taking eCPPT and/or OSCP, and I feel it really helps to bridge the gap between Security+/CEH style multiple-choice exams and OSCP's hardcore, manually-exploited (no automated tools approach), practical examination.
