yes, you should get an email with a pretty nice offer.

p.s. I'm not affiliated with INE or ELS so i dont know the exact triggers for the individual discounts however they mention it in their webinar and I got an 'upgrade' offer in my email this morning.

Is it just me or is this a very bad deal?

Usually you do a course with a certian goal in mind for a specific certification. Of course you can argue that, like with all that subscription stuff, you get access to everything, but that is hardly ever what a person really needs.

Let's say I want to do PTP ELITE, I pay 1600$ for the course, the final examn and get a eCPPTv2 voucher. To get the same value, I have to pay 2000$ for the course and an additional 400$ for the voucher (which is 50% more!). It gets even more bizzar if I just want to get a glimps at pentesting and only want to do PTS.

I just did PTS and wanted to continue with PTP, but that really puts me off. In september you could get 35% off everything. I definitley should have bought then...

I'd really like to be able to just buy a course, with all the material etc. like it was before.

It is indeed a very bad deal. I discovered ELS several years ago and has since took several courses from them. What I like about ELS is the ELITE package where I have no time pressure to complete my course and able to refer to the material years later. I usually buy the course when there is promotion and study the material as and when I am free. Now, not only I have to pay more, I am restricted to only 1 year access. You can argue that I can access more course material, but I don't have the time to do so many courses within a year. This is also not what I wanted. On average, I can only deal with 1 ELS course per annum or maximum 2 if I push myself.

I find it hard to accept that I still have to pay for the certification when I had already paid $1,999 for the subscription. Until INE/ELS start to includes at least 1 or 2 exam certification of any courses in their annual subscription, I wont sign up any ELS course anymore.

I got an offer to upgrade due to buying a course in the last 6 months. However, you will loose access to the elearnsecurity platform by doing so - so if you have outstanding exam attempts,  I imagine these will be lost.

I hope we will have more detailed information on elearnsecurity platform. Because at moment I see a lot of confusion among students.

I agree with you @raphi.ruf and @Hyde

I really would like to know what happens to my exam attempts if I upgrade too. Do I loose the pending certification attempts?

As far as I know: everything stays the same as long as you won't subscribe - if you subscribe, only hera and course is affected, but not the voucher as they are separated in Members Area. but I am not sure myself.

I understand a one time price tag for "unlimited life time labs" is a failed business model no matter how you carve it. At the time it was a business sales pitch but in the long term this is not sustainable.

With that being said there are thousands of customers with unlimited lab courses that require resources to spin up a lab whenever needed. I can only image the amount of money saved going to the new subscription model.

Personally, I loved going back to older courses and spinning up self dedicated labs at will. I also don't want to lose that access especially if I paid a premium for it.

I think a fair grounds option for students with unlimited lab time would be lifetime course/video access to the new INE security subscription WITHOUT unlimited labs. We would have the option to buy lab time and help support building/maintaining resources for INE's long term lab environment.

I am sure they thought of all scenarios, and will slowly just phase out courses that had unlimited lab time within the next 5 years. As they phase them out they will probably reach out to student to upgrade to the subscription for x amount of dollars with a free exam voucher of your choosing, etc.

Two cents, I know nothing about their plans, just speculation.

On Azure you can calculate the costs. Let us say you need 5 machines a 120h that is $11 for the VMs (low priority). Now, you have to add some services, but I do not think it is very expensive.
For PTX labs this is different, because you need better performance and you have a ton of Windows machines in a lab. One server is $43 if you use the 120h.

It is pretty clear what this means: If you bought unlimited lab time for PTS or WAPT this was a good deal for eLS, but if you bought unlimited PTX and use it >500h...

I used the PTP labs at least 500h and PTX is more difficult.

INE has a different cost model, the prices are just numbers, but the PTX lab hours are pretty expensive. I bought it to have it for >10 years, because I saw how cheap it was. The new model is stress free and it is a good idea to have unlimited lab time. I do not know if the new model is cheaper or not. Now, people do not care, but it reduces the support costs. People will not complain anymore.

yeah, I'm actually keen to switch over (unlimited labs and all that) even though i'll eat a few dollars. But, I'm not paying for my cert vouchers again.

Righto, just fired this off to support, i'll let you know if they respond.

Hi Team,I have a quick question which is shared by many on the forums.

So the $99 subscription upgrade states "but you will lose access to the eLearnSecurity platform."

We would like to know if this means we will lose our pending certification vouchers.

Thanks,
Tim

I got a reply from ELS support ovenight...

Thanks for reaching out!
So no. Your exam vouchers will not change. There are no current plans to retire the eLS Members Area platform in the immediate future. Not to worry, if that time comes, we will make sure you retain access to any course material you have purchased. If you upgrade, your'd still have access to your exam vouchers, but would lose all other content such as labs. Thank you!

there it is, would be nice to have this in writing somewhere on the site but I'm gonna take this.

For old ELS students certain questions remain open:
1. What will happen to the (old ?!) training paths on the ELS platform? Will they be deleted? will their completion no longer allow for lifetime updates to be obtained (as agreed)? How will you be able to buy (if you can) the course (s) missing when completing the path?
2. Will access to the old ELS platform be guaranteed forever as per contract?
3. What will happen to the expected launches of new courses?
4. Will it still be possible to purchase additional lab hours and unlimited lab hours on the old platform?

Having said that, I believe that this new policy implemented by INE is fallacious, especially because the old students have been treated really badly.
Even the fact of offering a pass at such a high cost is not good. It is true that you will have access to the entire educational offer, but the truth is also that a student is unlikely to be able to do more than one or two courses a year.
Another thing that is just not good is the fact of providing an annual subscription and no longer guaranteeing access for life to the purchased course. What if it takes me more than a year to complete the course and then I want to keep access (to the outdated material) for consultation purposes?
If this remains the case (i.e. the possibility of purchasing individual courses without the annual subscription policy will not be envisaged) I will opt to permanently close with ELS / INE and head towards other certifications / courses.
Too bad because I was going to conclude other paths.

These are great questions and it is possible to ask Don personally:

I can answer the questions without a guarantee:

1. What will happen to the (old ?!) training paths on the ELS platform? Will they be deleted? will their completion no longer allow for lifetime updates to be obtained (as agreed)? How will you be able to buy (if you can) the course (s) missing when completing the path?

The old platform cannot be deleted, nothing will change, we have a valid contract. Don said we can stay and we keep the access.

2. Will access to the old ELS platform be guaranteed forever as per contract?

It is a valid contract. I cannot switch, maybe we get later a special offer to get rid of us, but as long we keep this contract, we keep our rights.

3. What will happen to the expected launches of new courses?

New courses and updates are only on INE.

4. Will it still be possible to purchase additional lab hours and unlimited lab hours on the old platform?

I do not think so.

Honestly, it is PR disaster :D for private clients and the most things are not very well planned. At least the technical works fine and some videos are great, but the rest on the information side... This will change in the next business days, for sure. The new Pass way to go  is great for businesses but not for standard clients.

It looks like INE will change and adjust some things. Most likely we will have a free PTS choice and a monthly option.
